Purgatory with a 21st Century Feel

In this gripping exploration of a futuristic afterlife, a teen discovers that death is just the beginning.

Since her untimely death the day before her eighteenth birthday, Felicia Ward has been trapped in Level 2, a stark white afterlife located between our world and the next. Along with her fellow drones, Felicia passes the endless hours reliving memories of her time on Earth and mourning what she’s lost-family, friends, and Neil, the boy she loved.

Then a girl in a neighboring chamber is found dead, and nobody but Felicia recalls that she existed in the first place. When Julian-a dangerously charming guy Felicia knew in life-comes to offer Felicia a way out, Felicia learns the truth: If she joins the rebellion to overthrow the Morati, the angel guardians of Level 2, she can be with Neil again.

Suspended between Heaven and Earth, Felicia finds herself at the center of an age-old struggle between good and evil. As memories from her life come back to haunt her, and as the Morati hunt her down, Felicia will discover it’s not just her own redemption at stake… but the salvation of all mankind.

Woohoo!:
I can't say I've ever read a YA purgatory novel before. There are plenty of books out there about people falling in love with angels and what not, but not much about people stuck in purgatory. Interesting. I love it when an author comes up with an idea that hasn't been read yet.

I was in love with the idea that the keepers of purgatory were using people for their energy by having them access memories like a social media platform where you vote on your favorite. Memories that are shared are given tags and rated. What a great idea. I really wanted to hear more about that.

Meeh:
I didn't feel like there was much of a turning point in this novel. We were slowly moving forward, but if there had to be a turning point, I would put it in the last 10 pages... not where the turning point should be.

Everything came too easily for the main character. Felecia must come down from her drug addiction the Morati put her in way too fast. She taught herself to change her appearance, the space around her's appearance and conjure up weapons that propelled in the direction she desired. Her aim became perfect. Everything became perfect, and easy. Boring.

Rating: B

  1. I haven't read a book about purgatory before either. It sounds like this is definitely worth reading, even if the turning point didn't come until late in the book. Thanks for the chance to win it!
